Scott and Garnet Beardsley - photo by Fireweed
Beardsley Pottery is another amazing
highlight on the tour, positively brimming with diversity of style
and decorative techniques! Scott Beardsley has developed an
incredible new clay body including paper slurry that lends itself to
sculpting bas relief on pots and plates without cracking. In amazing
detail, the artist builds three-dimensional forms that appear carved
out of the convex surface of a large pot or plate, including toned
human figures and even elegant grasshoppers. Some of these pieces,
polished and pit-fired, range from slate grey to smoky black.
Other wares in the studio showroom include a line of sage green pottery featuring finely hand-painted vignettes of forested mountain scenery. Vases and lidded jars awash in turquoise-green crawl glaze appear wrapped in phosphorescent lichen.
Ivory-white dinnerware sets detailed
with seashells and barnacles, echo appreciation for the beauty
inherent in the natural environment that clearly inspires this
accomplished duo.
Both Garnet and Scott Beardsley have a
delightful sense of humour, rendering fanciful
drawings on plates, coffee mugs and more!
