DOWN TO EARTH POTTERY

Marjo VanTooren has a wonderful selection of wearable treasures available in her Down to Earth Pottery Studio including hand-made beads, buttons and pendant necklaces. This potter presses spiral shells, or tiny fern fronds and other leaves into the clay surface to create a delicate impression later highlighted with iron oxide, or dipped in vibrant colours.

Wheel work includes small bowls graced by tiny mice and vase forms created for single stem flowers.

VanTooren also enjoys combining different colours of clay to create a marble effect. She uses slabs of this variegated clay for fluted bowls, vases, cups and eye-catching platters. Other unique creations include pottery wood-fired in the local 'anagama' or climbing-hill-dragon kiln on Denman potter Gordon Hutchens' land.
