SEAN WOODS POTTERY
Sean Woods' new studio is located half
a kilometre off Denman Road at Coho Landing, the island's co-housing
collective. Featured on the tour for the very first time this year
(Woods has previously exhibited at Down to Earth Pottery Studio),
this artist's creative work space will showcase a selection of both
functional and artistic pieces.
Firing his pottery in an electric kiln using primarily cone 4 and cone 6 glazes, Woods enjoys decorating with an earthy colour palette ranging from cobalt blue to mocha brown. A number of bowls on display have been carefully carved with ornate lattice patterns, revealing the architectural quality inherent in their particular forms.
"I fantasize about encouraging a ceramics tradition that uses ecologically sustainable materials and which is based around popular participation in the production of functional ware. I have seen this possibility of village scale production of our cultural artifacts in the communal Anagama firings at Gordon Hutchens' on Denman Island. I can imagine a dozen or so similar kilns in the Comox Valley, each helping several families and friends produce the ware they need each year."
